When depression or anxiety arise we often trace their causes back in time. Thinking of present behaviors in terms of their formative causes is often helpful to their resolution. When we rethink, reconsider and reinterpret experience from years or decades past, we often find that we are still operating on inadequate or immature understandings of those events formed long before we had grown into the person we are now. A very conscious, careful reconsideration of old thoughts and feelings can lead to a new understanding of ourselves and our experiences, leading to a new freedom from old habits and unhelpful reactivity in our current circumstances.

When marriage counseling becomes necessary, the first keys are always communication and authenticity. Everything else follows from there. Until a couple can talk to each other, really talk, its hard to think about moving anywhere else. Both sides might be in for hearing some unpleasant truths so that real issues can be considered, discussed and moved beyond in the pursuit of resolution and personal intimacy. Much of the time the beginning of real communication can be helped by having a facilitator, a mediator, a "referee" to help both sides to speak fairly, reasonably and calmly until those traits of good communication become normal to the relationship. A new "normal" can need to be established and practiced so that we can start to hear each other again, if not for the first time.
