Mississippi Hunting Dog Association (Stone Co.Chapter) 05.06.2021

ATTENTION: Senators Neil Whaley, Kevin Blackwell, and Chuck Younger have introduced Senate Bill 2485 to implement a statewide permit system for ALL hunting dog...s from November 1st January 31st. This permit system would require ALL hunters that use dogs to obtain a permit number and display the permit number from your vehicle and on your dog. Any violation of this permit system (to include dogs that do not remain on lands that allow deer hunting with dogs) could result in criminal/monetary citations and loss of hunting with dogs for twenty (20) days or one (1) year to be determined by an administrative review panel. The bill can be viewed at the following link: http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us//SB/2400-2499/SB2485IN.pdf Please contact the Senate Wildlife Committee and ask that they OPPOSE this bill. ATTENTION - YOUR ACTION IS NEEDED!!!! Representative Bill Kinkade from Byhalia, MS (Marshall County) has introduced House Bill 1560, which will prohibit deer hunting with dogs in any county that has been designated as a chronic wasting disease zone. "Hunting deer with dogs is prohibited in any county that the Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has declared to be a chronic wasting disease management zone."... The MHDA vehemently opposes this bill as this appears nothing more than an excuse to ban deer hunting with dogs. There has been no scientific data presented that deer hunting with dogs has any impact on CWD. Furthermore implementation of such a ban would be contrary to all of the guidance provided from the MDWFP thus far to include increase harvest of deer and the need for samples from those harvested deer. It is also unlikely that deer movement from hunting with dogs would exceed any natural ranges as indicated by recent studies conducted by MSU. Please contact the following Representatives on the House Wildlife Committee where the bill is currently assigned and ask them to OPPOSE this bill. ACTION ALERT!!! House Bill 1539 has been introduced and would require the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to create a mandatory harvest reporting for white-tailed deer and wild turkey. As currently written, the MHDA does not support this bill for the following reasons: The bill does not lay out specific provisions that provide specific details on reporting requirements, funding, or enforcement. The bill is left open for the MDWFP to implement a tagging system as... they see fit without requirements of passing it back through legislation, thus it appears that MS residents will not be adequately represented in the development of this tagging system. It is unclear how these tags and supporting logistics of the program will be funded. It is unclear if hunters will be charged for these tags. It is unclear how violations of this system will be identified and enforced. The MHDA cannot support a bill that does not define the fundamental provisions of creation, implementation, and enforcement. The bill is currently in the House Wildlife Fisheries and Parks Committee.
